Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are battling it out off the field for the acquisition of Elche's rising talent Lucas Boye. According to Spanish news outlet Fichajes, the 25-year-old striker has piqued the interest of two of Spain's biggest clubs as a result of his performances this season.
So far in La Liga, he's scored seven goals and provided two assists for Los Franjiverdes, making him the team's top scorer.
Boye has scored 39 percent of Elche's goals in the top division and has been instrumental in the club's fight to avoid relegation, with the team now in 16th place. The Argentine was signed on loan from Torino in September 2020, but his performances led Valencia to purchase him permanently last summer.
In 22 fewer appearances than previous season, he's already doubled his total, returning the club's faith handsomely.
Elche's domestic opponents have taken notice of Boye's torrid form, with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in particular interested in his services.
With the sale of Alvaro Morata in doubt, Barcelona is considering Boye.
The Blaugrana are still working out the details of a deal for Juventus striker Alvaro Morata and have identified Boye as a possible replacement.
Sergio Aguero's unexpected retirement owing to a heart ailment has left them without a viable option in that position.
The only two natural strikers in the Barcelona team are Martin Braithwaite and Luuk de Jong, but they have struggled for consistency, making them unreliable for the last stretch of the season. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid is preparing a replacement for Luis Suarez, who is expected to leave the club after his contract expires in June.
After being declared surplus to requirements at Barcelona, the Uruguayan joined Rojiblancos in 2020. Last season, he led his new team to the La Liga title.
El Pistolero, on the other hand, is now having a difficult time in front of goal, with the last of his seven league goals coming nearly three months ago.
This has sparked speculation about his future at Atletico, with exit rumours circulating. Atletico Madrid wants to bring Boye to the Wanda Metropolitano if he does leave the Spanish city. Any trade will almost certainly take place in the summer, since Barcelona is in desperate need of a striker to lead the line.
With only a few days remaining in the transfer season and the club trying to offload Ousmane Dembele, it appears that Barcelona and Atletico Madrid will have to fight it out in the summer for his services.
